Using Designer for Web Services to write back data
Something not commonly known is that, in addition to using SQL Select statements in Designer for Web Services queries, you can also use Insert and Update statements.

This adds a powerful capability to Xcelsius dashboards, allowing them to write back data to a database via the web service.

Designer for Web Services has always supported this feature, but with the release of version 1.6.2 onwards this is now easier, because for Inserts and Updates an output return parameter is now no longer required in the query grid, removing the necessity to add a select query to the insert or update.

To implement an Insert or Update, add a new query to your Designer for Web Services project. In the Query box of the Queries window that appears, write your update or insert Statement, using standard SQL syntax.
The query can be parameterised with input parameters (using Tilde ~ notation) to allow you to transfer the data from the dashboard inputs to the database.

Don't forget to test your query, using test values in the grid and then pressing the Test button, to ensure that you have got the syntax correct. Then you can use your normal database management console to check that the test insert has gone into your database as expected.

What’s New in Flynet Xcelsius Server

Flynet Xcelsius Server 2010 (FXS) is a replacement for the discontinued Business Objects Xcelsius 2008 Engage Server. Flynet Xcelsius Server (FXS) contains the latest Xcelsius dashboard designer along with a new Flynet Designer for Web Services and has been created in partnership with SAP/Business Objects.

FXS contains the latest Xcelsius 2008 edition and is fully compatible with Business Objects service packs and hot fixes. Xcelsius Service Pack 3 brought us performance improvements, new charts (bullets and sparkline), various chart improvements and new chart selectors along with bug fixes and other enhancements. For a good write up on what’s new is SP3, see Ryan Goodman’s Top 10 Xcelsius 2008 SP Enhancements blog entry.

If you do not already have Xcelsius 2008 Service Pack 3, you can download it from http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/boc/downloads.

One of the criticisms of Business Objects Xcelsius 2008 Engage Server solution was that there was no way to buy separate Xcelsius and Flynet designers or buy add on Concurrent Access Licence packs. There was no easy way to grow your Xcelsius Engage Server implementation, and no easy way for partners to create dashboards to sell on to their customers.

With FXS, each building block can be purchased and resold separately. The FXS 2010 Base Kit gives you all the components you need to start a successful dashboard solution at a lower entry price point that with Xcelsius Engage Server.

As a part of the re-alignment of the Flynet product range, the Flynet Web Service Generator has been renamed the Flynet Xcelsius Server 2010 Designer for Web Services. A lot of work has gone into making the Flynet Designer for Web Services (DWS) easier to use. DWS is a lot more forgiving with SQL queries and needs almost no modification of existing SQL statements for them to work.

There are many improvements to warning and error messages, making it easier for you to fix any problems you may be having. There is support for OLAP cubes and Excel pivot tables. There are also a number of security enhancements, as well as full support for pass-through Windows user delegation.

There are also links from DWS that take you to our new blogs, wiki and forums.

We will explore some of these new features in future blog entries.
