Internet Information Services
Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) are services that can offer web pages and web services (among many other things) to your network. You can check to see if IIS (and the required sub-components) are installed by looking in the installed Windows Features (Vista), the configured Windows Server Roles in Windows Server or Installed Windows Components in Windows XP Professional.
Required IIS components
Windows XP Professional

How to install and confirm the installation of the required Internet Information Service components on Windows XP Professional
1.
In Windows, press the Start button.
2.
Click Control Panel on the start menu.
3.
In the Control Panel window, make sure you are in Classic View. The option to switch to Classic View (if applicable) will appear at the top left hand side of the Control Panel.
4.
In the Control Panel window, open Add or Remove Programs.
5.
Select Add/Remove Windows Components at the left hand side of the Add or Remove Programs window.
6.
Wait for the Windows Components Wizard window to appear.
7.
In the Components check box list on the Windows Components Wizard window, look for the Internet Information Services (IIS) entry.
8.
Select the Internet Information Services (IIS) entry by clicking the text (not the check box). The line should now be highlighted.
9.
Press the [Details...] button that is to the bottom right of the Components check box list.
10.
The Internet Information Services (IIS) windows should appear.
11.
In the Subcomponents of Internet Information Services (IIS) check box list, items that are already installed will be ticked. If the following items are not ticked, go ahead and tick them.
o
Common Files.
o
Internet Information Services Snap-in.
12.
Select the World Wide Web Service entry by clicking the text (not the check box). The line should now be highlighted.
13.
Press the [Details...] button that is to the bottom right of the Subcomponents of Internet Information Services (IIS) check box list.
14.
The World Wide Web Service window should appear.
15.
In the Subcomponents of World Wide Web Service check box list, items that are already installed will be ticked. If the following item is not ticked, go ahead and tick it.
o
World Wide Web Service.
16.
Click the [OK] button at the bottom right of the World Wide Web Service window.
17.
Click the [OK] button at the bottom right of the Internet Information Services (IIS) window.
18.
If you did not have to tick any options you already had all the necessary components installed.
19.
Click the [Next >] button at the bottom right of the Windows Components Wizard window.
20.
Windows will now configure any new components if needed. It may prompt for your Windows XP Professional installation disc at this point.
21.
Once configuration is complete the, you will be able to press the [Finish] button at the bottom right of the Windows Components Wizard window.

How to install and confirm the installation of the required Internet Information Service components on Windows Vista
1.
In Windows, press the Start button.
2.
Click Control Panel on the start menu.
3.
In the Control Panel window, make sure you are in Classic View. The option to switch to Classic View (if applicable) will appear at the top left hand side of the Control Panel.
4.
In the Control Panel, open Programs and Features.
5.
In the Programs and Features window, select the Turn Windows features on or off link in the left hand side column. If you have User Access Control turned on, you will be prompted to give Windows the permission to continue. It is safe to give this permission.
6.
The Windows Features window will appear.
7.
In the check box tree list you should be able to see Internet Information Services.
8.
Expand the Internet Information Services node. You do this by left-clicking once the square box containing a plus (+) symbol to the very far left of the Internet Information Services node.
9.
Expand the Web Management Tools node.
10.
Expand the IIS 6 Management Compatibility node.
11.
Inside the IIS 6 Management Compatibility node, items that are already installed will be ticked. If the following items are not ticked, go ahead and tick them.
o
IIS 6 WMI Compatibility.
o
IIS Metabase and IIS 6 configuration compatibility.
12.
Back inside the Web Management Tools node, items that are already installed will be ticked. If the following items are not ticked, go ahead and tick them.
o
IIS Management Console.
o
IIS Management Scripts and Tools.
o
IIS Management Services.
13.
Locate and expand the World Wide Web Services node back in the Internet Information Services node.
14.
Expand the Application Development Features node found inside the World Wide Web Services node.
15.
Inside the Application Development Features node, items that are already installed will be ticked. If the following items are not ticked, go ahead and tick them.
o
.NET Extensibility.
o
ASP.NET
16.
Expand the Health and Diagnostics node found inside the World Wide Web Services node.
17.
Inside the Health and Diagnostics node, items that are already installed will be ticked. If the following items are not ticked, go ahead and tick them.
o
HTTP Logging.
o
Request Monitor.
18.
Expand the Security node found inside the World Wide Web Services node.
19.
Inside the Security node, items that are already installed will be ticked. If the following items are not ticked, go ahead and tick them.
o
Basic Authentication.
o
Request Filtering.
o
Windows Authentication.
20.
Click the [OK] button to install any new components you have selected. You may be prompted to insert your Windows Vista disc at this point.

How to install and confirm the installation of the required Internet Information Service components on Windows Server 2003
1.

How to install and confirm the installation of the required Internet Information Service components on Windows Server 2008
1.
In Windows, press the Start button.
2.
Click Control Panel on the start menu.
3.
In the Control Panel window, make sure you are in Classic View. The option to switch to Classic View (if applicable) will appear at the top left hand side of the Control Panel.
4.
In the Control Panel, open Programs and Features.
5.
In the Programs and Features window, select the Turn Windows features on or off link in the left hand side column. If you have User Access Control turned on, you will be prompted to give Windows the permission to continue. It is safe to give this permission.
6.
The Server Manager window will appear.
7.
Expand the Roles node on the left by left-clicking the plus (+) symbol to the left of Roles in the Server Manager window.
8.
Under Roles, attempt to locate the Web Server (IIS) node. If it is present you can jump to step 23. If not, continue on to step 9.
9.
Right-click on the Roles node. On the context menu that appears select Add Roles. The Add Roles Wizard window should appear.
10.
You may have an introduction entitled Before You Begin. If you have this, press the Next > button at the bottom right of the window. The window entitled Select Server Roles should appear.
11.
Find the Web Server (IIS) check box node. Tick the check box to the left of this node.
12.
Press the Next > button at the bottom right of the Select Server Roles window.
13.
A window entitled Web Server (IIS) should appear. This contains and introduction to IIS.
14.
Press the Next > button at the bottom right of the Web Server (IIS) window.
15.
A window entitled Select Role Services should appear.
16.
Press the Next > button at the bottom right of the Select Role Services window.
17.
A window entitled Confirm Installation Selection should appear.
18.
Press the Install button at the bottom right of the Confirm Installation Selection window.
19.
A window entitled Installation Progress will appear. Wait for IIS to install.
20.
A window Installation Results entitled will appear.
21.
Press the Close button at the bottom right of the Installation Results window.
22.
Back on the Server Manager window make sure the Roles node is expanded. If not, expand it by left-clicking the plus (+) symbol to the left of Roles.
23.
Right-click the Web Server (IIS) node under Roles.
24.
On the context menu that appears, select Add Role Services.
25.
The Add Role Services window should appear.
26.
Under the Common HTTP Features node items that are already installed will be ticked. If the following items are not ticked, go ahead and tick them.

Under the Application Development node items that are already installed will be ticked. If the following items are not ticked, go ahead and tick them.

Under the Security node items that are already installed will be ticked. If the following items are not ticked, go ahead and tick them.

Under the Management Tools node items that are already installed will be ticked. If the following items are not ticked, go ahead and tick them.

If you didn’t have to tick any options, press the Cancel button at the bottom right of the Add Role Services window as all the necessary components are already installed. You do not need to follow any further steps.
31.
If you did tick one or more options, press the Next > button at the bottom right of the Add Role Services window.
32.
The window entitled Confirm Installation Selections will appear.
33.
Press the Install button at the bottom right of the Confirm Installation Selections window.
34.
The window entitled Installation Progress will appear. Wait for your selections to install.
35.
The window entitled Installation Results will appear.
36.
Press the Close button at the bottom right of the Installation Results window.
