What are Web Services?
  • Web Services are a standard format that has been agreed to facilitate machine to machine communication.

  • This method of exchanging messages via the web allows different types of software written in various languages running on dissimilar platforms to exchange data freely as if they were all on a single computer.

  • Web Services can be large and complex or small and simple and be activated either once or thousands of times a second.

What can web Services do for me?
  • The extent to which web services can benefit a company is limitless. If there is a reason to exchange data with customers and suppliers or communicate between departments and offices over the web or intranet then web services will be the obvious choice.

  • Web services can have any number of uses, for instance to check the availability of stock items in an on-line store prior to purchasing, or check available credit and validity of a bank account.

  • One particular use where web services are ideally suited is connecting data held in a database to a dashboard such as Xcelsius. Web Services are set to eventually replace previous forms of machine to machine communication such as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)
